With the triumphal arch of the Porte Saint-Denis, Louis XIV staged submission of Paris by the absolute ruler. Since the fourteenth, it was through the gate of St. Denis of Paris enclosure that the kings of France made their entry into the capital. The monarch met there the provost of the merchants who entrusted him with the keys to the city: City inducted its king.
In the 1670s, Louis XIV destroyed the wall defending Paris. Instead of the Porte Saint-Denis, he raised a triumphal arch commemorating his victory over the city of the English Netherlands, Maastricht. The Sun King in Paris takes its defense and built a new monument that represents a city to its knees.
